 Great Openings
by Jessica Tolliver

For many people, a home's windows and doors are included as almost an afterthought. These often unsung features deserve more attention than they get, though, if only because of the price tag they carry—windows and doors are two of the most expensive aspects of a new home.

At left, two beautiful windows from Andersen Corporation let natural light and gentle breezes into this stunning Great Room. More cheery sunshine pours into the room through the two skylights in the vaulted ceiling. Stylish, but understated blinds from Hunter Douglas shade visitors and family members from harsh afternoon sun.

Considering the many roles windows and doors play, and the many stresses they need to withstand, their price tag isn't exactly surprising. Windows and doors need to stand the test of years of use and, sometimes, abuse. They need to protect a home from blustery winds, plummeting temperatures and blistering sun. On the less practical side, windows and doors also need to reflect your own style and tastes, and complement the look of your new home.

At right, the luxurious master bath showcases a refreshing whirlpool tub from Kohler under a beautiful art glass window from Andersen Corporation. This gorgeous arrangement provides a dazzling spot to rejuvenate at the end of along day. Glass block from Pittsburgh Corning Corporation brightens the custom shower on the left.

A unique balcony with a natural-wood railing and charming French doors adds a dash of whimsy to this country-style family room shown below. A stunning sidelighted front entry by Royal Mahogany completes the comfortable, yet grand picture.
